I really enjoyed this one. It starts out by introducing Sophia and her family's restaurant, and I was invested in them almost immediately. The family dynamic felt genuine, and it was easy to root for them as they tried to keep their restaurant afloat. Watching everything unravel after one encounter with a powerful tech CEO made the story hard to put down. The pacing was steady, and I liked how the tension kept building as the attacks against the restaurant escalated. It definitely makes you want to keep reading to see how Sophia and her team fight back. If I had one small complaint, it would be that there were moments where the descriptions and explanations felt a little longer than they needed to be, which slowed things down slightly for me. Other than that, I thought it was a solid revenge thriller with characters I actually cared about. Bitter Grounds by H.R.Henry. a fast paced book about a murder and a large company with a CEO with a large ego who sabotage a small restaraunt because his ego was offended. Sophia Chen leaves a corporate job to come home and help her father save a 30 year family business. A client books the restaraunt for the night, asking for an extravagant menu. He hirs on the chef and then she doesn't comply, he walks out and doesn't pay the bill. He uses his position to have the restaraunt shut down. He sues the restaraunt and leaves Sophia with a challenge: sell the restaraunt, or loose it in court. An unsuspecting hero: the 'coffee guy' steps in to help. He gave Sophia a note that said: call me when you're ready to fight back. This story was original, the characters were easy to imagine. Sophia's left in shock when her dad is killed and she calls the 'coffee guy' and asks for help.
I enjoyed this fast-paced thriller about a woman, Sophia Chen, exacting revenge on a rich tech CEO. It pits an everyday family business against a big tech company and you'll naturally root for Sophia who is stressed but trying to do the right thing. The book did a good job of showing how quickly a person's life can be completely flipped upside down by someone with unlimited money and power. I also liked that the book mixes family, grief, and business problems instead of focusing on just one thing. It did feel heavy at times and some parts were dramatic, but it still fits the story's serious plot lines. Overall, it's a strong revenge story that is entertaining and worth reading if you enjoy stories about justice and redemption.

I picked this up expecting a typical, flashy Silicon Valley tech bro story, but Bitter Grounds has a surprising amount of soul. The contrast between the high-tech, artificial world of billionaires and the grounded, sensory world of a family restaurant is beautifully done. The story follows Sophia Chen, a former software engineer who steps away from her career to save her family's legacy, Homestead restaurant. The descriptions of food are incredible, like her mother’s traditional Taiwanese scallop dumplings reimagined with a Meyer lemon beurre blanc. Things take a dark turn when tech tycoon Xavier Rhodes enters the picture. The kitchen scene where Rhodes gets humiliated (and throws a billionaire tantrum over an amber splash of whiskey ruining his $10,000 Loro Piana custom cashmere blend) sets off a terrifyingly realistic corporate warfare campaign that kept me turning pages late into the night. It’s a fast-paced, clinical, yet deeply emotional revenge tale that feels incredibly relevant to today's economic landscape.
